I get asked all the time by photographers and clients how they can create a fantasy shoot without spending a ton of money. Trust me I get it. Between the props, costumes, backdrops, and more it all adds up fast. I spent years with this exact struggle.
I wanted it all. All the cool and super awesome fantasy costumes that are out there but couldn't afford any of them.
I spent years agonizing over this exact issue and finally realized that I can start small with just one dress and go from there.
But what to buy? There are so many options out there and I was so afraid to buy something that just wasn't worth it. We all know those crazy "wish" stories and I didn't want that to happen to me. So I spent some time, read over a ton of reviews, and most importantly looked for great in-use photos. That is when I found it! I felt great about buying it because worst-case scenario I could just return it. But I found it! An affordable "fantasy" dress on Amazon and let me tell you I have used it in tons of my sessions.
If I had to recommend a dress it would be this one. It is one size fits most and very versatile. It is made with very lightweight cotton (think cotton sheets) so if you live in a warm climate your models or clients will stay cool while wearing it. There are a lot of options and a lot of colors to choose from but I recommend the cream one to start with. If you purchase this dress go ahead and toss it right into the washer and dryer to give it a more natural worn look. I prefer to keep this a little more on the clean side for my shoots but it would be super easy to age and weather this dress to provide a different look to it if that is what you are wanting. It does have one downside if you want to call it that, it is only ankle length. But I don't see this as a problem for my shoots. I just use it to add an even more fantasy or fairytale look. (Think forest maiden running barefoot in the woods!)
